Oakland has its own major airport. It is the Oakland International Airport (OAK), which is located 8.5 miles from Downtown Oakland.

San Francisco International Airport (SFO) – 22.5 miles, 30-35 minutes by car from Downtown Oakland
Norman Y. Mineta San José International Airport (SJC) – 42 miles, 1 hour by car from Downtown Oakland
Every 20 minutes from 5:00 AM – 2:00 AM. There’s a walking route to the terminals outside of those times.

If you want to fly out from the Bay area, it highly depends where you are located and where you want to fly. Some direct flights are only possible on only one of both airports and there are differences in prices. Whenever there are possibilites for your destination on both airports, maybe the departure time is the deciding factor.
